What Does An IT Company Do?

Information Technology (IT) is a broad term that refers to the hardware, computer systems, networks, software and other elements that go together to provide operational functions. An IT company is different to a software company (which focuses on developing software) and many people confuse the two. Essentially an IT company provides the complete infrastructure that is used to provide computing services.

In overall terms an IT company oversees the implementation, management and use of devices that store, retrieve and transmit information over a network. They are responsible for building and maintaining a computer system as well as managing the software that is run on it and supporting the users of that software. Their main responsibility is to ensure that computer systems functions are available and working correctly to support business requirements. They enable a company to access the information they require, to communicate with others and to automate tasks in a business. Their responsibilities fall into the following three categories:

Function

IT companies ensure that hardware, software and other technology elements are operating correctly and efficiently and are responsible for fixing any problems that may occur. They must ensure that a system has security in place to protect business data as well as controlling access to the system. They are also responsible for installing and implementing new hardware, software and other devices and providing technical support to users of these. They are also responsible for managing all data (such as storage and backup) that is used within the company.

Infrastructure

Part of the role of an IT company is to make sure that the computing infrastructure for a business is fit for purpose and meet its needs. As well as maintaining existing infrastructure they must plan for future usage changes to ensure business continuity. They are involved with the purchase and maintenance of all the hardware and network elements that provide computing resources.

Compliance

Making sure that a company meets industry, regulatory and legal compliance requirements is a fundamental role of an IT company. Processes and procedures need to be implemented for the security of data and for its storage and management. They also set user access controls to ensure security is maintained relating to who has permission to access information and make configuration changes to the system.

Many companies have their own IT department but increasingly businesses are turning to IT companies to manage this for them. This is because they have extensive experience in the area, skilled staff and can offer economies of scale that make it less expensive for a business than having an in-house IT department.
