Whether you’re looking for a romantic night out or a great meal for a special occasion, there are many fine restaurants in Sydney, and there’s no shortage of options when it comes to fine dining. From fine dining steakhouses to world-class sushi restaurants, there are a few places you can’t miss in Sydney. From Michelin-starred restaurants to casual, family-run establishments, Sydney has it all.
Lumi
Located just across the street from the Star Casino, LuMi is an elegant waterside restaurant. Head chef Federico Zanellato has cultivated a world-class reputation by working in restaurants including Noma and Attica. The restaurant is one of Sydney’s most popular, with local apartment dwellers lining the street to eat at Lumi. The menu includes a three-course degustation and a five-course tasting menu. Guests can also choose from an extensive selection of Japanese dishes.
Momofuku Seiobo
Known for its Caribbean-style cuisine and theatre-style counter-seating, Momofuku Seiobo will be closing its doors at the end of June. Chef Paul Carmichael, formerly of New York’s Ma Peche, made the decision to close the restaurant after speaking with owner David Chang. The New York native shared Chang’s fascination with texture, and his menu at Momofuku Seiobo is an eclectic mix of Asian and European fusion cuisine.
Sasaki
In the heart of the CBD, the tiny Japanese restaurant Sasaki offers home-style Japanese food and is inspired by the cuisine of Shimane, Japan. The menu features simple dishes like thinly sliced whiting sashimi, hitokuchi-gashi, and a variety of side dishes. For dessert, you can sample bite-size versions of traditional Japanese sweets. Reservations are necessary for this restaurant, which seats only 25 people.
Automata
Automata is a newcomer to Sydney’s dining scene, opening just 18 months ago. The menu is comprised of five courses and two bite-sized snacks. The food starts with a seaweed cracker topped with kombu cream and bbq pumpkin tart, and it continues with a pink snapper tartare topped with asparagus and caper. Although I’ve never been a fan of pink snapper tartare, this dish was quite tasty.
La Salut
In the former sports bar of the Norfolk Hotel, La Salut is an excellent choice for a meal. It’s cozy and upscale, a far cry from the grungy pub you might expect from a restaurant of this caliber. Guests can enjoy dishes such as smoked mussels and salted crisps with paprika, as well as a selection of wines from Europe.
Tetsuya’s
The degustation menu at Tetsuya’s is an elegant balancing act of French technique and Japanese flavor. Served in a beautiful Japanese garden, it’s a delicacy masterclass of fine dining in Sydney. Highlights include the Confit of Tasmanian Ocean Trout, a salad of witlof and apple, and a chocolate stone.
Rockpool Bar and Grill
The sophisticated art deco room hosts a swanky cocktail bar and elegant grill. With a large wine list, it has become one of the Best Restaurants Sydney. Sophisticated steakhouse features a wine list that is second to none. Guests can enjoy a great view of the harbor while savoring a variety of dishes. A list of wine options includes the famous Darlinghurst vintage.
