Ideas For Small Kitchen Renovations

Kitchens face a lot of use and abuse so they tend to be one of the first parts of the house to require renovation. If you happen to have a small space, then this is the perfect opportunity to improve upon the previous design and make it more functional. Below are some basic ideas that you can incorporate in your new design:

Optimize Vertical Space

Unless you can knock down some walls and extend the kitchen, you are stuck with the floor area that you have right now. That is probably filled to the brim already. However, the walls probably have some empty spots left. Use these vertical spaces to increase your storage capacity. Build hanging cabinets and tall shelves to optimize every square inch on every side. You can also place a large pegboard on a blank wall and use this to hang common kitchen tools for better accessibility.

Use Glass and Light Colors

This will make light bounce around the surfaces and make the room seem bigger. You can put splashes of color with décor later on to add life. Solid cabinet doors can be replaced with glass for visual depth. Even the backsplash can be glass to reflect more light, though the typical white subway tiles also work well.

Get Minimalist Furnishings

If the previous countertops were too big that you could barely move around, then consider reducing their depth. Do the same for the size of the breakfast nook, kitchen island, and dining table if you have in the same area. The furnishings should have minimal footprint. Indeed, consider downsizing your old refrigerator if you don’t really store much food in it. Give away or sell other kitchen appliances that may just be cluttering the space.

Welcome Natural Light

If there is a window nearby, then have it open during the day. Enlarge it is possible with the wall structure. Flood the space with natural light. If this is not possible, then just add artificial lighting using energy-efficient fixtures. Place LED light under the hanging cabinets to illuminate the work areas.
