One of the most practical solutions for those suffering from incontinence is disposable bed pads. However, there are many things to consider when choosing pads, such as absorbance, size, and price range.
Sizing
The best size for a bed pad is variable depending on the user. The size of the bed, the size of the user, and how much the user moves during sleep all factor into how large a bed pad needs to be. For an adult user, bed pads should generally be at least 36 x 23 inches (90 x 60 cm), to maximize coverage.
Absorption
Also, consider the absorption ability of the bed pad. The description of most bed pads will tell you how much liquid it should be able to hold, in milliliters or ounces. The absorption ability of the pad should be weighed against the needs of the user since more absorptive pads will command a higher price.
Backing Material
Different backing sheet materials carry different benefits for the user. A plastic back sheet improves absorption and prevents excess liquid from leaking through to the mattress. On the other hand, they can be stiff and do not breathe well, so maybe uncomfortable to sleep on. Chux bed pads may be more comfortable but are less absorptive and reliable as bed pads. As such, consider the pros and cons of each material based on the needs of the user, whether the comfort or absorption capability should be prioritized.
Anti-slip
Bed pads should also be anti-slip. A bed pad must be able to stay in place throughout the night; a pad that moves out of place is useless. Someone who tosses and turns at night will especially need a pad that is anti-slip. Some bed pads are marketed as adhesive, but results can vary depending on the fabric and the type of movement that occurs overnight.
Price
Disposable bed pads can become expensive as they must be continually replaced. Price should be a consideration, but not the main deciding factor for overnight incontinence. If the user has specific needs, it may be best to consider a more expensive bed pad that fits their criteria.
There is no single “best” bed pad, due to the numerous factors that must be weighed against each other. Each user is unique, with his or her own needs, bed type, and sleeping positions, so it is worth trying multiple brands before settling on one that works. Buying smaller packages of different brands and trying them in succession will allow you to find the perfect pad for your needs, and from there you can invest in larger bulk packages.
