After years of research, ophthalmologist now recommend blue eyewear for computers. Regular eyewear may not be suitable, especially for those spending many hours staring at a computer screen. Eyestrain, blurred vision, and even retina damage could all result, over time, from daily use of computers.
What happens in your eyes when you look at a screen
A normal eye at rest is focused for distance. When we put a screen in front of us, either a PC or a smartphone, the eye has to make an effort to keep the focus closely for a long time. That effort can result in what is known as asthenopia or eye fatigue.
The results of the study, led by ophthalmologist Yuichi Uchino, from Keio University in Japan, and published in JAMA Ophthalmology, found that the more time spent in front of a screen, less protein MUC5AC (maintaining eye moisture) was present in eyes and they became drier.
To reach these conclusions, the team analyzed the tears from both eyes of more than 100 office workers (men and women) to determine the level of MUC5AC in total in tears. Participants also completed a questionnaire about the number of hours of work, and ocular symptoms such as irritation, burning or blurred vision.
Why Are Tears So Important?
Tears are much more than those salty drops coming out of the eyes. They are actually necessary to lubricate the eyes and for the removal of particles and foreign bodies.
According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, people develop dry eyes when the eye is unable to maintain a healthy layer of tears, which can lead to eye discomfort, visual problems and injuries in the cornea and conjunctiva. Dry eye syndrome causes irritation, itching, redness, foreign body sensation or sand in the eye surface, in addition to fatigue or heaviness in the eyelids or tearing.
Eyestrain caused by computer use may worsen due to:
Sleep deprivation. When you sleep less than necessary, the eyes can become irritated. During sleep, the eyes rest for an extended period and are replenished by nutrients.
• If you should be in front of the computer for a marathon work session, take regular breaks or short naps, if possible.
• With eyes closed, apply a warm compress on them.
Improper use of contact lenses. If you wear contact lenses, it is important to properly use and maintain, especially if you use computers and other digital display devices frequently
• Give your eyes a break: wear blue eye wear for computers
• Do not sleep with contact lenses, even if they are rated for extended use.
This is becoming more prevalent, and ophthalmologist say these problems show up in about 40 percent of cases see. By simply using blue eye wear during prolonged use of computers, you can decrease the incidence of eye problems.
