Bed Rails For Seniors

Those who are of advanced age are more at risk for fracture resulting from a fall. While the use of non-slip floor coverings and other aids can help prevent accidents, there is another hazard that may be easily overlooked, the bed. As a matter of fact, it is not uncommon for an elderly person to fall or roll out of the bed, leading to serious injury. However, bed rails for seniors can help prevent this type of accident from occurring.

Types of Bed Rails

There are several different types of rails that may be available. The most common type are those that are attached to the bed frame itself. This helps prevent the rail from breaking or slipping down if the individual were to roll onto it or apply pressure. Another option are the 2 rail system and the 4 rail system. While some beds can be purchased with the rails attached, the consumer does not have to replace the entire bed if they choose not to do so.

Ensuring Rail Safety

Although these devices are meant to promote safety and are very useful, it is important that they be used correctly. Incorrect placement or positioning can result in injury. For example, too much space between the bed and the rail can lead to entrapment. These types of incidents can be avoided by following manufacturer instructions.

Costs of Appliances

These are considered a type of DME, or durable medical equipment to put it simply. While DME can be expensive, there are several varieties that are affordable to the consumer. The costs will depend on several factors such as the brand and the type. In some instances, health insurance will pay for safety equipment such as this for seniors, especially if the primary care physician has recommended it and is willing to write a prescription.

Other Important Considerations

Bed rails for seniors is a safe and effective way to help prevent injury from rolling or falling from the bed. However, as previously mentioned, it is important that they are used correctly. Also, many models allow for padding to be used with the rails for those who may bump into them frequently or those who may suffer from seizures, in order to further promote safety. Whether the individual is at risk for falling from the bed or becomes disoriented, trying to climb out, this can help prevent a potential accident from happening.
