8 Tips To Become A Firefighter

If you want to know how to become a firefighter, follow these 11 tips to make your dream come true.

MEET THE BASIC REQUIREMENTS

If you want to be a firefighter, you do need a driver’s license and be at least 18 years old. If you are younger than 18, you can still be involved as a junior firefighter. The maximum age is between 28 and 35 but does depend on where you apply.

MEET AND IF POSSIBLE, EXCEED THE EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

You will need a minimum of a high school diploma. How to become a firefighter, a lot of firefighters get a degree in fire science and as an EMT in order to further their careers. Having both of these qualifications will improve the odds of you getting hired. Again, the qualifications required will depend on the department that you want to apply to.

GET INTO THE BEST PHYSICAL CONDITION THAT YOU CAN

You will be required to pass a physical test, which will include hose dragging, stair climbing, ladder raise, search and rescue, etc. You need to be well prepared for this in order to qualify.

DO NOT GET INTO TROUBLE

Everyone has made mistakes in the past but how you went about rectifying them is important when you apply. You will be asked during your interview. Be honest about everything, including your driving record – give details where possible.

KEEP YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA FREE OF SUSPECT ACTIVITIES

Be very careful what you post on your social media platforms, what you like, and even what you share. If there are any pages that do not reflect you in the best light, remove them. Close all your accounts if needs be.

YOUR CREDIT SCORE MATTERS

Many would think that this does not matter when it fact it does, so keep it as clean as you can.

INVOLVE YOURSELF IN YOUR COMMUNITY

Get involved with volunteering in your community in some way or another. It does not have to be fire-related, as long as you show your presence to the community and make a difference.

PASS THE WRITTEN EXAM

Study as hard as you can for your written test. It comprises of multi-choice questions, which are divided into different sections. The exam will be easy if you know your work.
